lavenderesque: A Campaign of Ignorance

Here's something to start off the new month: an opinion piece.

I’m all about “love yourself” and “embrace your body” and the like, but things have been taken too far in this society. We can all agree that a fit and toned body looks good, it shows a strong human being who takes care of themselves and can probably fight for themselves if they were ever in a dangerous situation, I mean, fat chance in this society but it happens.

So what am I ranting about?

This:

Looks harmless, and quite empowering for anyone who’s overweight, obese or just happens to think they’re not as skinny and toned as the VS models. My problem with this lies in the one-liners. “Love my Body” vs. “Real Beauty.” Why aren’t Heidi Klum, Giselle Bundchen, Adriana Lima, Miranda Kerr and the other girls considered real beauty? It’s kind of confusing to the growing generation of the girls and boys of tomorrow. They’re going to be raised to think that someone who takes care of themselves and works hard at life isn’t worth the attention you should be giving to the woman next to her who half-asses trying to be healthy and uses the commonly used phrase, “I have a wonderful personality.” And I’m positively and completely sure that she is. But you see the problem, yes? Both are completely important and neither should be neglected. It’s as if someone who doesn’t really look after herself to the fullest thinks she deserves a Leonardo DiCaprio look-alike because she is a “real” woman, ‘cause we all know Bundchen had a piece of that cake, guilt-free.

I found this picture on a Facebook page called “WeStopHate” and when I clicked on it, there was a comment on the sidebar from a man (not just "normal" women anymore) saying that the models from VS are the ones that look sickly and the Dove models look healthy. The complete insanity in that observation just makes me feel so enslaved to an uneducated society when it comes to beauty and health. We're not exactly stopping hate, are we?

I myself classify as overweight, the doctor told me so, but I don’t think I’m at all better than the VS models because for one, they actually make an effort to keep their bodies and minds as healthy and beautiful as possible, and they don’t make excuses. Heidi Klum: four kids, not even forty yet and still rocking a hot, strong body. Giselle Bundchen: married, one kid, thirty-two, and she’s still working it. Miranda Kerr: almost thirty, still looks twenty, one kid with . . . Orlando Bloom. Adriana Lima: a crazy boxer, how else did you think she had her crazy toned body? The other girls call her Superwoman. And she also has a kid and is also married. All past thirty, all hard-bodied, strong, independent, working moms.

Yes, they’re taller than average, the most beautiful, have great hair and are mostly foreign super-babes but they don’t make excuses when it comes to being beautiful and healthy, they know they have to work. Some admit to loving working out and others don’t. Megan Fox, one of the most beautiful women ever, hates working out, but she pushes herself for obvious reasons. Of course, the Dove women might also be working out as well, but clearly not as much as the VS women, and eating has a lot to do with the way your body looks and how you feel personally.

The VS models don’t just work out daily, eating right is also a lifestyle, and to show you that eating “less” than probably what the Dove women eat is actually healthier for you, here’s an article on an experiment studying restricted calorie diets. It entails the study of two rhesus monkeys, one given a normal diet and the other given a “nutrious, low-calorie diet” and the results; the one given less food ended up with “fewer age-related diseases,” stronger bones and higher energy levels which slows down the aging process, making them live longer. And you don’t look and feel great weighing a ton, believe me, I know.

In the end, it’s what we do and how we do it that makes us truly beautiful, but looking on the surface, it’s purely biased to think a thicker and unhealthy-looking woman is actually sexier and more healthy-looking than the VS models, and that’s a fact. Rail-thin? Never. Obese? No, thanks. Healthy? All the way. And the VS women up top are more healthy and, in my (quite well-informed) opinion, more beautiful than the women modeled by Dove.

What’s your opinion?
